Programming tools, also called developer tools, are the software used to create, debug, maintain and support other programs. They range from integrated development environments and browser inspectors to version control clients, terminal multiplexers and the command line utilities that tie them together.

Tooling posts age faster than anything else I write, and that turns out to be the interesting part. An IDE that once defined a workflow gets abandoned, a browser inspector that had to be switched on through a hidden preference ends up a right-click away, and a version control client bolted onto an editor loses to the one everybody else standardised on. What survives is rarely the tool — it is the reason the switch was worth making.
